What do Rock n Roll and Chainsaws have in common? Cherie Currie: Rocker, writer, and chainsaw artist!
Messin’ with the Boys (recorded with sister Marie Currie in 1980) and Reverie (in which she worked with Kim Fowley and Lita Ford in 2015) spanned 35 years. In 2019, she released The Motivator with Brie Darling (formerly of Fanny).
The 70’s Icon and Runaways singers solo project features a bevy of rocks finest on the album, Blvds of Splendor. The album is available digitally via Blackheart Records, and features guest collaborations with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Slash and Duff from Guns N’ Roses, as well as Juliette Lewis, Brody Dalle, The Veronicas and drummer Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), who also produced the set.
“Cherie’s voice tells it all, she is the real deal. And now more than ever that voice tells the story of where she’s been in her life. This record is about who Cherie Currie is now. We’ve waited a long time to hear this icon of Rock N’ Roll do what she does best. I’m very proud to be a part of this album by one of the best female singers of all time.” said Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver).
During the production of Blvds of Splendor, Cherie had a near death experience when she fell over 12 feet from a scaffolding while chainsaw carving. she suffered severe head trauma and partial facial paralysis following the accident, for almost a decade. After her recovery, she met and went into the studio with Fanny drummer & vocalist Brie Darling. In 2019 they released their critically acclaimed The Motivator album, via Blue Elan Records. Cherie is back to chainsaw carving again, and has also released Blvds of Splendor – which has a 4.8 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.
“I’ve never had so much fun making a record before. We all looked at each other and went, ‘Oh my God, there’s magic happening here” Cherie said.
Cherie Currie & Matt Sorum originally began work on Blvds of Splendor when Cherie was promoting The Runaways movie (streaming on Netflix), staring Dakota Fanning as Cherie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. After its inception, Cherie went back to work on her chainsaw carvings, and did other studio work. This included work on the 2015’s Reverie release, which features some of the last works of legendary Runaways manager/producer Kim Fowley.
Blvds of Splendor was released on 180 Gram Translucent Red Vinyl in 2019, with a limited run of 3000 copies. This was the first time the highly anticipated album was available worldwide digitally for the fans. The digital release features three bonus tracks that were not included on the Record Store Day vinyl release, including a remake of The Runaways classic “Queens of Noise” featuring Brody Dalle, The Veronicas, Juliette Lewis and Matt Sorum (paying homage to late Runaways drummer Sandy West).
Today, her body of work is not just music, it is also her spectacular wood carvings – created with a chainsaw. In 2005, she opened a chainsaw art gallery in Chatsworth, California, where she does chainsaw art. As a chainsaw artist, she has participated in and won awards at three world chainsaw art competitions. As a birthday present for Dakota Fanning, who played Currie in the film The Runaways (based on the book Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway by lead singer Currie) she sculpted a life-size guitar.
Cherie will be participating in the Celebrity Karaoke at Friday nights afterparty, hosted by Cowboy Mach Bell. Cherie will be offering autographs, selfie photo ops, and the opportunity to sing along with her!
