Gary Sohmers operates Wex Rex Collectibles, “The Emporium of Popular Cultural Artifacts”. Browse some of the classic rock posters and other ephemera, all types of vintage toys, huge collection of vinyl records and other collectibles from The King of Pop Culture himself, television. and radio expert appraiser. (He’s the dude who sports a grey ponytail and usually wears a Hawaiian shirt on the Antiques Roadshow.)
He attends, sells at, and runs numerous antiques and collectibles events each year as Wex Rex Collectibles, and has appeared as an appraiser of toys, collectibles, and memorabilia on the popular PBS television program Antiques Roadshow. On his first day, he appraised a painting by musician Frank Zappa, garnering attention from a USA Today photographer. His most valuable “Roadshow” appraisal was for a collection of Charles Schulz original “Peanuts” drawings worth $450,000.
His collecting bug began at age 8, when he began to wheel and deal his toys at a yard sale. Gary Sohmers developed a respect for collecting from his father’s passion for campaign buttons. He went from hustling toys to campaign buttons to record albums to everything that is “popular culture” – from Mark Twain to “The Simpsons.”
Gary is buying and selling pop culture collectibles and memorabilia all over the East Coast. He has been a featured guest on many television and radio programs over the past 30 years. As a lecturer, he speaks at historical societies, schools, libraries, corporations, antiques shows, and appraisal and other special events on a number of subjects.
“Everybody wins when someone with wise eyes looks at everything before the trash-men cometh,” he said. “You can make a lot of money with comic books, records, toys, early video games and old computers.” – Gary Sohmers, Wex Rex Collectibles
