Loose Salute Acoustic Performances, Saturday and Sunday, April 9 & 10
Lawless & Yates, Loose Salute – Saturday 9th, Noon – 12:30 pm
Mick Lawless – Sunday 10th, 1:30 – 2:00 pm
Veterans of the local music scene for years Lawless & Yates will be paying homage to the compositions of Michael Nesmith in duo form, the guys will conjure up the powers of “the Nez,” playing songs from his days as a Monkee and his critically acclaimed solo work that paved the way to his status as a country rock/Americana pioneer.
Mick Lawless and Tom Yates in Loose Salute works some serious voodoo on the psychedelic-infused rocker Sweet Young Thing by playing with what it might sound like if The Jimi Hendrix Experience did a Nesmith song. It’s a killer cut when performed live, with a trippy and electric haze that entices, engages and enlightens the listener, making them thirsty for more. Loose Salute has become a band worthy of emulating – and listening to – in its own right, having been influenced by Michael Nesmith and The First National Band.
“Pisces, Cancer, Leo & Yates Ltd.” may be an album of covers by The Monkees and Nesmith, but it’s still an enthralling treasure that proves again why The Monkees are well-deserving of a spot in the elitist Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Featuring singer-guitarist Mick Lawless from Missionaries, Moose and the Mudbugs, and White Knuckle Sobriety, Loose Salute delivers hot Americana, with pop smarts and hearty hooks for everyone. Taking its name from Michael Nesmith and the First National Band’s second album, Loose Salute attempts to provide a comprehensive review of the Nez catalog.
A true Monkees’ purist will recognize that Loose Salute’s latest release, “Pisces, Cancer, Leo & Yates Ltd.,” is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the classic Monkees’ album, “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.” And, despite several deep-cut Monkees and Nesmith covers, that’s the only similarity between the pair.
“The arrangements are not verbatim,” Lawless said. “It’s our interpretations of the songs that made up the Monkees-Nesmith phenomenon. We don’t wear the (Monkees) hats and the shirts. We just do the music. That’s what it’s all about.”
