Bernadette is best remembered as the first Asian American TV cast member on ZOOM, and best known for her signature “arm thing” on the show. Now a practicing energy/sound healer and active singer/songwriter, Bernadette’s mission is to help people tap into their true creative power by awakening their inner light and brilliant essence that lies within every one of us.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month this May, “Shine Your Light” is an upbeat, joyful pop tune dedicated to all Asian Americans and Asian-identifying folks. The intention behind this song was to help shift our moods from fear to love, and remind us all of our light through singing and dancing. “I originally wrote ‘Shine Your Light’ just two months after the tragic Atlanta Spa shooting in 2021,” Bernadette Yao shared, “which took the lives of 6 Asian women. During these challenging times of racial and political division, and an ongoing pandemic, I hope this song can be an antidote to racial trauma by reminding us all to love ourselves.”

‘Shine Your Light’ has emerged as a song of resistance to racism, ableism, and classism to remind us all to be in our joy and embrace what makes us unique and brilliant. The recording was produced by Leon Mobley, percussionist (Ben Harper, Nas, Damian Marley), who is also a fellow ZOOM cast member. Playing percussion on the song, Leon added back up singers & musicians including Chris Joyner (keyboard), Yukiko Matsuyama (koto), Rebecca Schlappich Charles (violin), and Scotty Mearig (bass guitar). With my vocal arrangements, we added back up singers: my friend and singer/songwriter, Lisa Doscher, my daughter, Christine McEachern, Leon Mobley, Keith Batlin, and Samir Moussa. Mixed and Mastered at CGS Productions by Keith Jones. Cover Art by Danielle Mailer.
